DESCRIPTION OF CYO MEETINGS & WORKSHOPS
The Acts of the Apostles (2 part scripture study, 2 CYO Units)

Participants need to commit to both sessions of the study to receive credit.

The Acts Study equips teens with a foundational understanding of the main characters, doctrines, events, and journeys that make up this incredible “gospel of the Holy Spirit.” Beginning with the Ascension and Pentecost, these four sessions offer a deeper look at Sts. Peter and Paul, the evolution of the early Christian Church, the call to evangelization, the sacramental ministry, the first Christian communities, the trials of an evangelist, the call to offer our lives as a living witness, and much more.
The Book of Revelation (2 part scripture study, 2 CYO Units)

Participants need to commit to both sessions of the study to receive credit.

The Revelation study gives teens an invaluable foundation for understanding the book of Revelation, while pointing out its modern significance, practical application, and daily relevance to a teenager’s life. Each lesson unpacks the book’s main points and key chapters, while continually referring to the wisdom offered by our Catholic faith.
Salvation History (4 part scripture study, 4 CYO Units)

Participants need to commit to all 4 sessions of the study to receive credit.

This study begins with the Genesis creation story and leads us through the Hebrew Testament where we come to understand that every story tells of God’s love for us and points to the heights and depths of His love in the gifting of His Son for our salvation.

Dynamic teen presenter Mark Hart makes the Bible come alive for Catholic teens by unpacking God’s Word in a way they can relate to. This Bible study shows teens the “big picture” of salvation history. When young students of the Bible first understand the “story,” they are eager to learn more. The net result: teens begin to wrap their minds and hearts around the Scriptures. They come to see the Bible as a relevant part of their lives.

Thy Kingdom Come (4 part scripture study, 4 CYO Units)

Participants need to commit to all 4 sessions of the study to receive credit.

This is a study of Matthew’s Gospel in which we will encounter the heart of God in Jesus. From his birth, to his sermons and ministry, his miracles and parables, his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, his cross and resurrection, to the inception of the Catholic Church and the sacraments, we journey together and encounter the life and love of Jesus alive for them and for us, yesterday, today and forever.

Theology of the Body (4 part workshop, 4 CYO Units)

Participants need to commit to all 4 sessions of the study to receive credit and they must be in at least 13 years of age. .

This study is designed to help teens discover God’s plan for sexuality, love and life. Teens will be challenged to ask and look through the eyes of faith for the answers to the essentials questions: Who am I, What is my purpose in life, Why did God make me a male or a female, How can I find true happiness, How can I find real and true love?

A NOTE ON THE 4 and 2 PART SCRIPTURE STUDIES AND WORKSHOPS

Each session builds on the next and is progressive. As well, all the workshops were designed for either 8-12 sessions, so we have already condensed it as much as possible and thus we ask for a full session commitment to have it make sense and to provide a meaningful grasp of the particular subject. This is very much like a class in a particular subject where the knowledge is layered from a foundational overview to the specifics and unlike CYO meeting and our Presenter Series where the subject matter changes from week to week. A participant may not leave off a study one month and pick up the missing session in another month. NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN IF A PARTICIPANT MISSES ANY ONE SESSION. Also, because there is so much material packed into these sessions, a participant will find that they can take the study or workshop more then once and they will still learn something new that they missed the first go around.

History of the Studies: When we wanted to begin scripture studies and workshops for our youth population we had met to discuss how we would structure these offerings. It took us a few years, but we found what we think is a really well done program, but because of the amount of information and design length of the programs we took yet another year to condense the materials. The Kingdom Come and Salvation History studies are actually designed as 8 week studies, while the Theology of the Body is designed as a 12 week study. We felt that the length of commitment of these studies would dissuade young people from participating, thus the condensing of material. Having condensed the material we were left with yet another decision, we knew that if a student were to miss even one meeting, they would essentially be missing 3-4 classes and that they would therefore not be able to follow the successive material, so missing a session would not be a feasible option. So then we went onto think about how to handle this situation and we came up with two possibilities: one, have a make up session in between each of the four sessions, which would mean we could offer only a few workshops or option two, to double the amount of options and not allow for absences. We felt it was in the best interest of the wider number of students to double the offerings and not allow for absences.

CYO Meetings (1 CYO Unit)

CYO Meetings are led by our parish’s Peer Ministers who are in high school and who have been trained to plan and lead meetings. Topics include themes around Catholic identity and moral living, hot topics in the news and media, psycho-social issues such as body image, bullying, peer pressure, etc. The topic or theme change each week.
